Improving Spiral Staircases With Steel And Iron

In architecture, many design concepts have undergone various improvements

. This design improvement is evident not only in the visual aspect of the design, but also in the materials used during construction.

Design improvements have allowed architects and builders to use sturdier materials such as metal as a replacement for wood. This has given many architectural designs a significant increase in durability, without sacrificing aesthetics.

For years, metals such as steel and iron have been replacing wood and stone in many architectural designs. Stone walls and wooden bridges have given way to iron and steel in modern times. The structural enhancement from wood to iron has never been more apparent in the construction of staircases.

Staircases, particularly spiral staircases, have been used to create a vertical bridge that allows a person to walk up a flight of steps and get to a higher floor, without taking up too much space from the floor below. Back in the early days, spiral staircases were used in medieval times as a way for knights to climb up a castles towers. The spiral symmetry gave the defenders of the towers a significant advantage in combat. The helical orientation of the spiral staircases forced any attacking soldier to engage the central wall, as most soldiers were right handed back then. The knight in the defensive position gained advantage not only by having more room to operate on his right side, but also by being on a higher vantage point. As functional as these old stone spiral stairs were back then, they would soon receive a major upgrade with the introduction of iron spiral stairs.

Todays modern iron spiral stairs have replaced stone or wooden stairs simply because they are more robust and easier to install. Although there are still specialists who build and install stone or wooden spiral stairs, iron spiral stairs are fast becoming more popular among home owners.

Iron spiral stairs are usually built at the shop and according to a set of measurements which were taken from the installation site beforehand. Once the structure is completed it can then be delivered to the client and welded into place. Unlike wooden stair kits, iron spiral stairs do not require any after-market assembly and installs in a few minutes after the structure is built.
