Incontinence in women is often caused by damaged muscles in the pelvic floor

. These muscles go through significant trauma during pregnancy and child birth which can result in them being stretched, torn or otherwise weakened. When this set of muscles is damaged, women become susceptible to stress incontinence.

This for of the condition is caused when the pelvic floor muscles can no longer support and protect the bladder which makes that organ susceptible to outside stresses. A simple sneeze or a hearty laugh can provide enough pressure on an unprotected bladder to force it to involuntarily discharge urine into the urethra.

One common treatment for this form of incontinence is an exercise regimen known as Kegel exercises. This is basically an isometric exercise that repeatedly contracts the muscles in an effort to tone them back into shape. The problem for some women is being able to actually identify that particular muscle group as it is often confused with the abdominal muscles.

One means of helping women target the correct muscles is through biofeedback. Biofeedback is a painless method to monitor a person's body and to immediately tell them when the correct muscles have been targeted. This method has helped hundreds of women who otherwise would have spent hours training the wrong group and as a result, have no impact on their condition.

Biofeedback is just another in the wide array of therapies that can be used to cure or at least manage this embarrassing and sometimes disabling condition. Your first stop for developing what the right therapy is for your specific case is your doctor's office. Working together you can get a proper diagnosis as to just what type of incontinence you have and what the best treatment regimen is.

What's important to remember is that incontinence is not a natural part of the aging process and that it can be treated. Don't ignore it and don't let it change your lifestyle. There is help.
