Increasing Illumination Requirements May All Be Solved With Led Lighting

, which refers to the unfortunate notion that people wait until there is a crisis before they respond, even when they have long known of the problem. So it is with fossil fuels a finite resource mankind has know was diminishing for decades, but over which are only now beginning to react. The solution will be many-pronged, but switching to LED lighting can make a huge difference.

Because the most limiting source of energy is the dwindling supply of fossil fuels, the topic of power consumption and its reduction generally focuses on transportation, particularly automobiles. But even when the power is in the form of electricity, the burning of coal, natural gas or oil is predominant, so other uses should be considered as well. One are often ignored is the use of electricity to produce light.

Other uses are often overlooked, yet every structure on earth has the need to be artificially lit, many even during the daytime. Humans have long ago passed the era of living within the natural patterns of sunlight and darkness. In the US alone, 500 billion kilowatt hours of electricity are used for illumination in residences and commercial facilities.

The way our buildings and homes are lighted presents a great opportunity to reduce the consumption of power. Typical strategies to save energy mean giving up something. But unlike these other efforts, changing the source of illumination can be accomplished without giving up comfort or performance.

The humble light bulb has been in use for over a century, and has represented a stable source of illumination and a predictable cost of energy. But incandescent bulbs use most of the energy to heat their filament, and when it is hot enough, light is emitted. A new source, light emitting diodes, produce almost no heat, and are therefore many times more efficient.

The luminescence of a 75 watt standard incandescent bulb can be replicated by an LED bulb using only seven watts of power. Over a period of a year the energy use and cost is reduced by a factor of ten. For a single bulb the numbers are not all that enormous, but considering each of the 115 million households use approximately fifty bulbs, fully optimized it would be like an injection of more than 100 million dollars into the economy.

In addition to the money and energy that can be saved this way, there is a great potential to help the environment. The energy saved could be as great as that of 150 coal plants, which dump more than 500 million tons of green house gases into the atmosphere. It is also as much as all the power created by all the US nuclear power plants combined.

The bulbs themselves have other advantages, such as the 50,000 hour lifetime and their much greater durability. They can also be made as tiny bulbs, and are responsible for the tremendous clarity of high definition television. As the cost of these bulbs decreases, the switch to LED lighting will gain in popularity and help us reduce power consumption.
