Setting Up A Camp Laundry

When going on a camping outing, especially one that is more than a weekend

, you will probably want to be able to do some laundry if the need comes up. The usual way it goes, is that we overpack for catastrophes and then end up with double the laundry when we come home. Packing lighter and doing a little bit of clothes washing while at camp will keep your volume down in your suitcase and the amount of laundry is lower when you return.

The inevitable part of your laundry is having a clothesline. Even if washing your clothes is not necessary, a line is something to have set up for anything that happens to get wet, like towels and swimsuits. When finding a place for it, put it away from the fire or you will end up with smoky clothes. Some string it in the sunshine behind their tent, some on a far side of the camp away from all activities, but shielded with a tarp. Morning dew and surprise rainstorms will not aid in drying.

Clothespins do not add that much weight to your cargo and will be most helpful in many ways, even if you are just trying to dry some socks that got wet on a hike. Draping over the line works, but you will find that you will lose articles of clothing as the wind picks up. Pins will make them stay put.

For about $60, you can pick up a Wonder Washer through Amazon. This little machine is great for camping or apartment living, although you will still need a hose or pitcher of water for rinsing. It is capable of washing a few articles of small clothing, like shirts and underwear, at a time and is not big enough to wash jeans. But it would take care of small childrens clothing or make shirts and socks wearable again. Simply pour in the water, soap and add your clothes. Then set it on the base with the timer and it goes! One thing about this machine, if you do not have access to electricity through an RV or campground outlets, you may want to invest in an inverter that plugs into your cars cigarette lighter and then makes it possible to plug in electrical items. This washer does not run on batteries, but for emergency uses, many have found it to work very well.

So dont feel like you have to go without clean clothes even though you are camping. Ask your RV sales representative about the option of washers and dryers in the rigs. Some opt to not have them, some dont support them, so check it out. If it is not an option for you, take these suggestions to heart and never go without clean clothes again! Going camping is often viewed as being a dirty excursion but it doesnt have to be. Make your camp clean and comfortable, full of fun, and your family will learn how to do that when they go with their own kids one day. Your practices of being clean, even in the wild, are great lessons to be learned.
