After wheat Rice is the most commonly used grain for food. Worldwide there are 40,000 varities of this grain. Because of its popularity it is cultivated all over the world especially in the areas where average rainfall is higher than other areas as paddy fields need more water than other grain crops. The size of the grain and the smell it has when cooked determines the quality of the crop. The insistent use of gluten free food products has made rice more popular as major ingredient of food items. It has minerals like magnesium, potassium and has number of amino acids which makes it a healthy source of proteins. It is food of two third of the planet population.

After reaping the crop it is threshed to separate the paddy from straw. The straw of rice plant is used as fodder for cattle, raw material to produce hats and other things. The husk is a good for filling of mattress and also used as in safe packing. Some of its varieties have the characteristics to expand in both dimensions when boiled. Rice is also used in numerous desserts as well. The pilaf is the worldwide cooked dish made of rice and usually of meat.

Rice for Pakistan is one of the main crops that bring foreign exchange to the country. A huge quantity of it is used locally as large population of the country like to eat it in the main course of their meal. Pluvial areas of central Punjab are famous for the export quality rice. Thats why most of the rice processing mills are also situated in this area. Developing countries like Pakistan are largely dependant on their land resources. The food crops in those states not only fulfill the local needs but also help the economy to rise above the fiscal deficit issue.

The brown color of the grain indicates its greater nutritional values than that of white one. Rice is considered as cash crop in Pakistan because of its value to raise more money for the grower. In the recession stricken globe the price of this commodity is also on decline. But in the country the rate is higher and observing the same trend. The inflation of inputs in the local market and scarcity of water availability in canal irrigated areas has made it harder for the grower to decide in favor of rice when planning to cultivate a crop. The abolishment of the ban on Indian Rice export further drags the rice exporters of the country in the troubled waters. Pakistan has set a target of 3 million ton export this year which will not likely to be achieved specially due to the ban on export to the neighboring country Iran.
