Independence Day Fun and Fireworks
There is nothing greater than watching a whole town come together to celebrate the freedom of our great country! The Great Falls Independence Day celebration has to be one of the very best in the nation. All of the festivities begin at three o'clock in the afternoon, when the Fourth of July Parade kicks off. You can show up early to find the best viewing spot along First Avenue South, Park Drive, 8th Street, and Central Avenue. The theme of the parade this year is "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave." If you would like to participate, you'll have to fill out an application, but you can find that on the city's website.
After the parade, you will certainly want to keep cool until the fantastic fireworks display. The Mitchell Pool and the FlowRider at the Electric City Water Park will both be open until six o'clock in the evening. Pack up the family and head on over for an afternoon filled with refreshing fun before you head to Elk's Riverside Park for the fireworks.
Remember that you can't bring your own fireworks to the park. Instead, you can relax and mingle while you wait for the display to start around ten o'clock that night. The fireworks are free each year to the public because of the donations that are made to the People's Park and Recreation "Fireworks Forever Fund." Be sure to dig out some pocket change or bills to donate to the "Fireworks Forever Fund" so that you can enjoy the fireworks for free every year.
If you plan to have your own Independence Day celebration at home with your family and friends, then you should check the city ordinances before you light any fireworks. You are more than welcome to enjoy your own fireworks on July 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but not before eight o'clock in the morning or after midnight. Be sure that you are using the fireworks on your own property, too, because there are steep fines for setting off fireworks on public property, such as streets or parking lots. Some fireworks are prohibited, too, no matter where you use them. Sky Rockets, Roman Candles, and Bottle Rockets are not allowed, and breaking the rules can result in some pretty steep fines. The whole point is to have fun and be safe, so make sure that you follow the city and state statutes!
