Independent Medical Exams
Independent medical exams are performed during cases where in a doctor or an accredited
medical professional is required to make an overall assessment of a patient of interest. These kinds of examinations are done in order to check the performance and condition of the patient for different needs such as medical support, compensation and insurance claims. There are a variety of reasons why these kinds of examinations are carried out.
Assessment of work related injuries
In cases where in an employee gets injured or is involved in an accident during their work hours or had a work related injury, there is a need to perform independent medical exams. This is performed in order to assess the current situation of the employee to determine if he or she is fit to get back to work, how extensive the injuries were and how long it would take for him to recuperate. Also, in such cases where in the company or the employer was found to be responsible for the accident, proper compensation is given after the examination has been made.
Insurance claims
During cases where in an insurance claim was filed, there is a need to verify if everything within the document filed for the claim is authentic. An official assessment is made by authorized personnel such as a therapist or physician that would declare whether the claim and the compensation coincide with each other.
Otherwise, necessary adjustments are made in order to provide the appropriate amount in terms of compensation. Aside from this, hospital bills and other payables incurred due to accident should also be covered by the insurer if the medical examiner rules that they should fall within the coverage of the insurance policy.
Searching for a second opinion regarding a medical condition
Aside from insurance claims and employee assessments, there are also instances where in independent medical exams are utilized in providing a secondary opinion regarding a patients medical condition.
These types of examinations are usually done by the request of the patient himself or the immediate family when the initial results may have discrepancies or are rare findings. In these cases, the physician who will do the secondary examination usually has no knowledge regarding the first diagnosis so that he can arrive at his own results based on actual findings.
By keeping the initial findings hidden during the examination and assessment, there is no chance of bias in terms of diagnosing the condition. If the results coincide with the initial findings, the diagnosis is more likely true otherwise discrepancies may call for additional laboratory examinations.
There are numerous reasons why independent examinations are requested. Basically, this tool is used in order to get unbiased results regarding the medical condition or state of a patient of interest. This helps large corporations and insurance companies ensure that they are compensating these people for the right reasons and none of them are committing fraud by trying to trick these institutions by providing money for a condition or injury that did not actually occur.
