Indian Clay Pots Of Curd

I spent my first few days in Calcutta suspicious of everything

. I had read about at least thirty or so horrid diseases one could catch, including leprosy and rabies, and knew that just about everyone got a good case of Delhi Belly at least once during their travels. But I was determined to avoid even that.

Our guest house was comfortable and clean, but there was no way I was going to even think about sipping the filtered water they had, and I could not bear to bring myself to eat the breakfast eggs either, imagining them to be diseased (when I look back at it now though I realize that conditions for Indian chickens are far better than those for their American counterparts.)

At the very same guesthouse we befriended an India chap and went out with him for an evening stroll. He asked suddenly, Would you like to try some fine curd? Well, I knew curd meant yogurt and by fine I imagined a clean, shiny establishment with glass windows and doors.

But the curd shop turned out to be nothing more than a mud shack run by an obviously impoverished father and son. I just knew that if I ate curd here I would get horrendously sick. But I ate it and not only did I not get sick, it was delicious! In fact, I ate it there every day for the rest of my days in Calcutta.

The odd things was how it was served: in clay pots that looked like little flower pots, on saucers that also served as lids when you were done and for stacking.
