The Indianapolis Colts have a tough curse to break this season: the curse of the Super Bowl hangover

Statistically, many Super Bowl-losing teams have disastrous next seasons the year after their Super Bowl losses (see: 2001 Giants, 2002 Rams, 2003 Raiders, 2004 Panthers, 2005 Seahawks, 2006 Bears, 2007 Patriots...), but will the Colts fall prey to this NFL phenomenon? Not if Peyton Manning can help it.

Manning and the Colts make up one of the consistently strongest teams in the league year after year, winning 12 or more games every season for the last seven years and posting strong runs during the playoffs almost every year for the last decade. The Colts go into the 2010-11 football season with something to prove as a Super Bowl-losing hangover looms overhead, but all signs early this offseason point to success in 2010 for the blue-and-white Horse.

The Indianapolis Colts have had a relatively quiet offseason, not making many flashy moves as they focus on their core of experienced players to lead the team into the regular season. The Colts are known for harvesting relatively cheap players in drafts and turning them into powerhouses - Jerraud Powers and Austin Collie, most recently - and perhaps this year's draft picks will yield more in this same vein.

The Colts stocked up on depth this offseason, addressing the need on their defensive line by adding Jerry Hughes in the first round of the draft. The team also took an offensive tackle (Pat Angerer) in the second round and a cornerback (Kevin Thomas) in the third, but eyes should be on tight end Brody Eldridge, a fifth-round draft pick for the Colts, to potentially help Indy's running game this season.

As far as veterans go, perhaps the most exciting news to come out of training camp this month is that safety Bob Sanders looks to finally - finally - be healthy. Sanders is a crucial part of the Colts' defense when he's healthy, but injuries have severely set back his playing time over the last few seasons, even garnering him the name "Banged-Up Bob." Sanders hasn't been completely healthy going into training camp for years, but if he really does get back on the field this year the Colts will have one of the best defenses and arguably the best secondary in the league.

Indy has several available weapons on the team's defense, and the addition of Sanders would be the finishing touch on an explosive defense that already includes Antoine Bethea at free safety and Kelvin Hayden and Jerraud Powers at corner. Using Melvin Bullitt as a backup means the Colts have options should Sanders get injured again this season, but excitement is building in Indianapolis to have all of these players together in the lineup.

Even better, these hard-hitters aren't nearly half of what the Colts have up their sleeve this year. If there's one single reason why the Indianapolis Colts will be contenders for the 2011 Super Bowl championship instead of succumbing to a Super Bowl-losing hangover, it's because of the 'dirty dozen' - the 12 defensive starters returning for the team. The Colts have 12 starting defensemen on the roster who have Super Bowl experience, and the recent addition of Deshea Townsend from Pittsburgh makes one heck of a baker's dozen.

The Colts have plenty to be excited for in the 2010-11 football season, and that's only part of the reason that Indianapolis Colts tickets are hot sellers for games this season at Lucas Oil Stadium. Will Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts make another Super Bowl appearance in 2011? Judging from the offseason, it's fully plausible to think so!
