Innovative Fabric Displays

Companies are coming up with innovative ways of marketing their products at trade shows by using dynamic text and image displays on fabric

. Using the latest technology, eye-catching and previously never-seen fabric display forms are being shown at company events and trade shows. Inventors have also come up with ways of displaying videos with sound on fabrics. They are exploring different ways of using clothing to display advertising messages in unique ways. From fur and thermochromic fabric displays to those using LEDs- inventors have developed novel ways of combining fabric and technology to create awe-inspiring visual exhibits. Here is a look at some of these new display forms.

Fur fabric display

A fur fabric display consists of three layers: the bottom-most layer is made of a conductive material that can transmit electricity to the remaining fabric and create an electrostatic field all across the fur, giving each fur strand equal electrical charge. The fabric's basic design or color forms the next layer. This can be an image, the company logo or a color. The design is not affected by the fur; the fur reveals or hides parts of the design at any given time. The fur forms the third layer. It is short enough to reveal the design of the fabric present underneath when the fur strands stand up on application of an electrostatic field.

Imagine that you have used green fur to cover a red shirt. When the conductive layer is charged, the green fur strands would stand on end and reveal the red shirt below. The effect it would create is that of the shirt having magically changed colors. Models advertising the product at the company event or trade show can wear such fabric displays (as shirts) to catch visitors' eye.

Thermochromic fabric display

In this fabric display, the dye used on the fabric has thermochromic properties, i.e. it can change color with the change in temperature. The thermochromic dyes are used on shirts worn by company models. When the shirt heats up, the dye reveals the company logo or advertising message. As the shirt cools down, the logo/message appears to have disappeared. The thermochromic dye consists of liquid crystals that arrange themselves in particular helical structures. As the crystals get heated, the helical orientation changes and the helices reflect light of a different wavelength. The human eye perceives it as a change in color. When the crystals cool down, they once again reorient causing the shirt to return to its original color.

LED fabric display

Using LEDs or light-emitting diodes, companies can advertise their product in the form of light shows on clothing. A model can wear a shirt that has a glowing image of your company logo or brand slogan and move around strategic areas of the convention center, catching the attention of show visitors and advertising your product innovatively. Such fabric displays are easy to create. Light emitting diodes are attached to designs cut out in the shirt (in the shape of the logo or product) and each LED connects to a circuitry, which is covered with a thin fabric lining. A small battery pack is attached to the shirt pocket. As the power source is turned on, the LEDs glow through the thin cloth, displaying the message in the form of a light show.
