Installing Sliding Windows In A Masonry Wall
Masonry walls present a special difficulty when looking to add sliding windows
. The first step is to outline the position for the wall. You set one of the lower corners about an inch below where you want the window sill to be, and then use a drill with a masonry bit to drill through the wall. Next, use a level to create a level line for the bottom edge, and mark off the other corner. Set that corner about half an inch beyond the outer edge of the window, to give you room to make adjustments.
Once you've drilled the second hole, use the level to set the upper corner - again half an inch longer than the sliding windows' height - and drill them. At this point, you'll need a powerful saw with a masonry-grade blade to cut through the wall, and be sure to wear goggles to protect your eyes. If you have drywall on the interior, cut it as well, and then knock out the masonry blocks in the opening.
Clean the opening and test to see that it is big enough for the sliding windows. Next, position shims on the sill and attach with galvanized nails. If necessary, pre-drill holes to keep the shims from cracking. Then place the sliding windows into the opening and adjust with additional shims to get it level and plumb. After that, secure it in place with additional galvanized nails. You then add a bead of sealant around the entire perimeter of the windows, attach the trim work around the outside edges of the windows, and repair the drywall on the interior. Your windows are now complete and ready for use.
