Installing Wooden Floors

It is important that you are aware how tough it can be to install a wooden floor especially if you are considering taking on this job yourself

. On the other hand though, it will also be something that will be the source of a lot of pride if you get it right. Wood is a material that just looks attractive as a floor covering and is also durable - it should last a lifetime. Wooden floors can be installed just about anywhere in the home but because of the risk of the wood rotting from excessive moisture, many people tend to avoid installing it in their kitchens or bathrooms.

Wooden Floor Installation Tips

When it comes to making it easier to install your wooden floors, the following information should help you out.

- When you are ordering your wood you should make a point of ordering an extra fifteen percent . This is because it is very likely that you are going to make a few mistakes and when you have to cut some wood you are going to have pieces left that you can't use.

- When you get your wood delivered it is generally recommended that you leave it in your house for a few days before commencing work. The purpose of this is for the wood to acclimatise to the humidity level in your home.

- Whenever you lay a wooden floor, the boards should be laid in a perpendicular direction to the floor joints.

- Before putting down the panels on the floor joints check the joints for any squeaks. You can reinforce any areas where there are squeaks by using a long drywall screw.

- Moisture protection is important under a wooden floor so make sure that you lay this before the wooden panels. It is possible to use something like vapour barrier paper which will work just as well.

- It is usual to begin at your longest wall and move out from there. The first two rows should be nailed down by hand. And it is a good idea to prepare for your finishing nails by drilling in some pilot holes.

- Try to leave a six inch gap between the panel joints in each row because they should not be too close together.

- You may find it easier when installing wooden floors to lay out a few panels at a time; just make sure that you are leaving the gaps between the joints for each row.

- Each row can be levelled out with the help of a small piece of scrap wood. A gentle tap on the piece of scrap wood which is placed beside a wood panel will ensure that the fit is tighter.

- The job will become much easier if you use a floor nailer and you can start using this once you have got going.

- You will likely need to use a pry bar to install the final row and ensure a tight fit.

These tips will help you in your job of installing wooden floors but you will have to get some more detailed instructions to ensure you do the job right.
