Integrity Is Not What We Do As Much As Who We Are

Nelson Mandela was a brilliant statesman and a leader of outstanding integrity

. He possessed a moral authority and concern for the truth with which few could compete. His life proves that it is possible for leaders to be men of integrity. Surveys conducted by Barry Posner, a leadership expert also writes and lectures extensively, calls integrity the most important ingredient of leadership. He says that it is a vanishing commodity today. Personal standards are crumbling in a world that has taken to hot pursuit of personal pleasure and shortcuts to success. Disillusionment soon sets in when a leader fails to meet the standards people unconsciously long to see in those who are there to guide us. The more integrity a leader shows the more trust he is given. Every time he practices what he preaches he makes deposit. Every time he shows kindness to insignificant people, he makes deposit. A leader destroys confidence of his followers wherever he breaks a promise, shows little interest in his peoples lives, is not totally honest with people, is invisible as a leader, displays arrogance, talk the talk but doesnt walk the walk. When these things happen trust is eroded, and though he may still leader in name, he will risk loosing some followers and diminish the trust of others. A leader of integrity is complete. He takes his own advice and practices what he preaches, he is able to lay aside his own desires and put those for whom he is responsible first. Leaders who are sincere dont need the services of P.R. companies etc. It soon becomes common knowledge to everyone. In the same way insincerity can not be hidden, disguised or covered up, now matter how competent a man may otherwise be. The only way a leader can keep the esteem and good will of the people is to earn it. No one can fool all the people all the time. Each of us, eventually, is recognized for exactly what we are not what we try to appear to be. Another factor is our slippery slide down the slope of lost integrity is that society and its institution do not present us with a good model. It is normal that our leaders to use spin, hype and half truths. Often we just keep silent and go along with it rather than stand out as different. A serious failing when we consider Edmund Burkes observation: The only thing necessary for the triumph of the evil is for good men to do nothing. The man of integrity works securely, he has no fear ofauthority, and he walks at peace with himself and the world. More than ever to-day people are looking for leaders, men and women of integrity, that they can admire and whose examples they can follow. In these days of such uncertainty many are looking for hope, direction and spiritual help.
