InterStim - A Likely Solution for Your Bladder Control Problems

If you have bladder control problems you aren't on your own. Approximately 12.2 million Americans suffer from problems associated with an over active bladder, and that includes merely a portion of problems associated with bladder control.

To treat these types of problems people often attempt a variety of solutions from adult pads to medication. Except in several cases these solutions simply aren't sufficient. These problems can sometimes exist due to a miscommunication involving the brain as well as the controllin nerves of the bladder. If this is the case, InterStim Therapy may be an option for you. InterStim is a two step, proven neuromodulation therapy that was approved through the FDA in 1997 intended for urge incontinence and then again in 1999 for urinary retention and urgency-frequency. It works by targeting wherever the miscommunication is in the sacral nerves and stimulating them by means of a mild electric pulse at an intensity suitable for each patient.

The first step is the trial or test stage, to make sure that the InterStim is a suitable choice for the patient. The test stage is performed at your doctor's office or as an outpatient procedure and typically takes twenty to thirty minutes and will comprise of you lying face down and receiving a local anesthetic, such as Lidocaine, to dull your skin where the work will be preformed. Next a needle and lead (a thin, insulated wire with electrodes at the tip) will be inserted into the sacral foramen (the suitable sacral nerve in the low back) on the left or right side. Once the appropriate intensity is established a lead wire is threaded through the needle and the needle is removed leaving the temporary lead wire in place which can be then linked to an external control device. This control device can then be used by the patient while at home. During the test which is usually three to seven days, you will record your bladder problems. If these problems decrease by at least 50%, and you and your doctors are happy with the results, you may choose to go on to step two which is the implantation of the InterStim neurostimulator.

Step two is the actual implantation of the InterStim unit in the sacral nerve. This step requires an extensive physical, and generally requires an over-night stay in the hospital. During this procedure you will be asleep and the doctor will disconnect the external controller and substitute it with an internal one. This controller is prest by your doctor, though the patient will be able to manage the intensity to a certain extent and switch the InterStim on and off using a wireless remote.

Interstim is not suggested for those who suffer from stress incontinence, mechanical obstructions, have internal screening or implanted therapy devices (such as a pace maker). If your bladder did not demonstrate a suitable response for the test stimulation, or if you are incapable of operating the neurotranstimulator, then InterStim is probably not suitable for you. As always it is best to consult with your doctor to determine the best treatment or combination of treatment options for you.
