Internal communication in a business can simply be defined as dialogue between an employer and employees and dialogue between work colleagues.

A meeting with the boss and employees is a top down approach. Colleagues review of the meeting afterwards is a bottom-up approach. Other forms of internal communication include newsletters, emails and memos from the boss, intranets and many more.

The above situations provide an opportunity for the shrewd companies to engage with their smart and successful workers to instill confidence in them and keep them motivated. Internal communication can only have value when delivered in a language a receiver is able to comprehend, in a comfortable medium and timely manner. The message transmitted should be well conveyed and bring about an outcome that is measurable and specific. The best communication strategies in a business can only be realized with the alignment of internal communication and the goals of the business. Companies have a brand or image which they have to maintain. This can only be achieved by constant delivery of good services to the customers. The most important resource a company has is its employees. This is so because they provide a means by which its products and services are actually delivered. The company management has the responsibility of the company to inform employees and make them aware what the company wants to achieve. What they need to accomplish in terms of individual career and brand image goals.

We should understand that good internal communication strategies are not only addressing employees but provision of guidance is of great importance. The way the message is being conveyed and the tips on which the sharing process is done. Focus should be on all the company levels.

Internal communication is not a one-way street. The business component parts of a business need to b communicated well across all the levels and channels. They are dependent on the success of the recipient preparedness to listen and the timeliness of the delivery communication. The effect is the health of the company.

Internal Communication should bring out: loyalty, shared vision, commitment, satisfaction, service focus and empowerment. Generally, we can improve the effectiveness of internal communication by choosing appropriate receivers and communicators, appropriate medium or channel and a concise message that makes a company more competitive and responsive.

It is important to note that unimportant functions such as office gossip are likely to be delivered alongside the crucial informal communication which cuts across the formal reporting procedures so as to get things done. This is one of the main objectives of boosting internal communication.

Internal communication I also defined as the human side of an organization, maintained by employees communicating among them and also sharing information. There is a need to understand that the spontaneous nature of communication is more difficult to control and manage. The main reasons for this include speed, opportunity and response to the situational changes. This forms part of the most dreaded part of the managers tasks.
