Introduction of DiSC
Previously, we spoke about communication and non-verbal cues in the virtual workplace. We talked about how non verbal cues can be interpreted differently in the virtual environment. We also briefly mentioned how the implications of the DiSC behavioural system can aid you in understanding each individual's non verbal cues.
Let's take a step back, what is DiSC? To refresh your memory, DiSC is a behavioural profile that segments individuals into four different behavioural styles. The styles include Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness. The DiSC instrument helps teams look at how their members tend to behave and what motivates them in any given situation.
By understanding how this profile works, we need to take a look at each of the behavioural styles. The "D" represents Dominance in DiSC. They are people who have a tendency to be very direct.
Next we have the "i," which stands for Influence. These people tend to be extremely friendly, outgoing and communicative. They are our team builders.
The third style, "S" stands for Steadiness. These individuals are the ones who are always willing to help. You can count on their loyalty and cooperation.
Finally we have "C," which stands for Conscientiousness. They tend to be extremely demanding on themselves and others. They are tremendously detailed-oriented and would rather do things right than do them fast.
In the virtual world, communication is the most important tool. Depending on how you tailor your style, it can drastically improve your virtual team or hinder their progress. By using this assessment tool, you can pin point each of your team member's unique styles. Once you determine what style each individual is, you can adapt your style to meet your team needs.
By adapting to your team members style you will create an environment where you will get the most out of each of your team members In our next article, we will conduct a detailed analysis of the Dominance style. We will feature their strengths and the challenges they bring to the team as well as how to alter your behaviour to effectively work with an individual who is a primary "D."
