Introduction to Basketball

Basketball is a game full of thrill and excitement. Game of Basketball is played between tow teams each having 5 players, including one captain who decides the playing strategy and order other players to act accordingly.

On the court, there are two forwards, two guards and a centre, where players are required to take position. Players can move in this prescribed area. Playing time is divided into two halves each having duration of twenty minutes. There are two baskets on the field each pertaining to different team. Each player tries to put the ball into his different team. Each player tries to put the ball into his opponent's basket for which he receives two points and team having maximum points is declared winner at the end of the game.

United States is considered the birth place of this game in the year 1891. After which it became so popular that in 1936 it was included in the Olympic Games. In 1899 first professional league was formed in United States. In real sense, in the year 1930 game gained its popularity, which was a result of facilities and changes by which game became interesting and excited. There is hardly any nation of the world where people of all ages and both sexes have not been attracted by this game. Not only men but women also participate in this game the evidence of which is the fact that in the year 1983 that first women competition was played in Northampton Mass. Today, it has become very popular throughout the world and people of both sexes, irrespective of their ages are enjoying this thrilling game. Some important skills of the game are:

a. Ball handling,

b. Passing: - Bounce Pass, Chest Pass, Baseball Pass, Overhead Pass are different kinds of passes.

c. Jumping

d. Catching

e. Dribbling

f. Shooting: - Front Shot, Side Shot, Pivot Shot, Free Throw Shot and Jump Shot are some of the important shots commonly used in the game.


This game is played on a court having a length of 28m from inside edge of boundary line and a width of 15m. No kind of obstruction is allowed on the court. Game is started with a jump ball at centre circle of ht court. For each basket, Players are awarded with points and in this manner team having maximum points at end of the game is declared the winner.

The referee designates the official scorebook and the official scorer. The duties and responsibilities of the official scorer are indicated. Incase of doubt, signal the floor official as soon as conditions permit to verify the official's decision.

The rules committee strongly recommends that only official scorer and timer be seated next to each other. The scorer's location at the scorer's and timer's table must be clearly marked with an "X".

The scorer's responsibility is so great that floor officials must establish the closes cooperation and understanding with them. The scorer must be accurate.
