Introduction to Landscaping and the Landscaper

Landscaping is the art of manipulating the natural environment so that it will appear in a certain form. It can be done to any property surrounding a home, building, or structure. In the profession of landscapers, one requires knowledge, not only in gardening, but the construction and installation of buildings and structures, as well as has the ability to take into account all the factors that will affect the landscape and to harmonize it. Landscaping can be done for the purpose of beautifying the area, or even to make the area functional, but whatever the reason, it is an important consideration for our daily lives. For instance, a green but neat garden will help you relax your mind after a long day's work. Or perhaps, your front yard and the steps are lit to prevent trips or even theft from occurring. For public parks, a beautifully designed landscape will attract people to the town or to make recreation there a choice. Indeed, landscaping can do all that.

For landscapers, they begin their work by making detailed observations of the current property, sketching the building and its surroundings, as well as identifying the limitations there are with the current landscape, and possible limitations with the future idea. Such limitations can include neighboring buildings, the quality of the soil, climate of the area, and so on. As soon as they are done mapping out the plan, they will move on to the design. Designs begin with the pathways, before moving on to the rest of the features like swimming pools, ponds, gazebos, benches, and fountains. After that, they will add more details to the surroundings, such as the trees, plants, or shrubs, which complement the look that the client is going for. Landscaping designs can be themed as well, where landscapers will need to base their designs on.

However, the task is not only to make changes to the environment, but to appreciate the existing ones and finding ways they can be manipulated to fit into the picture. With landscaping, it is about working hand in hand with nature, instead of placing concrete on every opportunity to dominate it. Apart from that, landscaping designs should also include more than just the image of the idea; it should also incorporate the practicality of each item they place in the design. Although their jobs may only last for the period of designing and making sure that the design is sustainable, once their job is done, the landscape will be left to other professions to take care of, like the gardener. Hence, practicality is extremely important so that people are able to keep the image of the landscape more than a memory, but as something they can live with.
