Investigating The Architecture Of Geneva

Once you have booked your holiday in the French Alps

, and have arranged to get from Geneva to Chamonix, why not take a few days in the Swiss capital to explore all the city has to offer. Visitors heading from Geneva to Chamonix often are understandably often keen to get to the snow, but this is a world city that is a destination in its own right.

With a history that dates back to the pre-Roman era, the architecture of the city is some of the most interesting in Europe, with its mix of eras, periods and styles that range from the medieval to the modern structures of the Red Cross Headquarters. Even if you head straight from Geneva to Chamonix, once you have had your fill of skiing, head back to the city for a day or two and treat yourself to an exploration of the excellent medieval architecture it has to offer.

Medieval architecture

One of the best examples you can see is the Tour du Molard, or the Tower of Molard, which is located at Place Molard at the heart of the city. The Tower Molard dates back to the 14th century and was originally part of a defensive wall that protected the port. The tower that remains today is a reconstruction of the 1591 building. Seeing the medieval military tower is impressive in itself but you should also visit the Maison Tavel, which is one of the oldest civilian, medieval buildings in the city. Originally built in the 11th century, the house was rebuilt by a wealthy Genevan family after it was damaged by fire in the 13th century. The house is a great example of medieval architecture and today it is a museum where you can while away an afternoon and learn more about the fascinating history of the city.

Military architecture

Even though Geneva is not often thought of in relation to the military, there are several buildings that were actually built for military purposes that add to the diverse architectural heritage of the city.

While skiing and snow are probably more on your mind than military fortifications, before heading from Geneva to Chamonix, take a day to stroll around the remains of the 14th century, fortified castle, the Tour de l'Ile. Located on the banks of the Rhone River, the remnants of the tower are all that remain from the chteau built there in 1219. After youve seen what you want of the castle, head over to the Ancien Arsenal, or Old Arsenal. The old Arsenal was originally designed as a granary on the site of a Roman marketplace and was converted to a gunpowder depot after l'Escalade. The current structure dates from 1663 and has murals and frescos to enjoy. It currently houses the State Archives.
