Iowa birth records and Iowa death records have been officially registered at the

Department of Public Health, Bureau of Vital Statistics beginning July 1, 1880. Divorce records were promptly included in 1906.

County offices also keep pertinent records which are generally open to the public, but these documents are limited and incomplete since registrations of births and deaths were not formally established early on. A person can apply for a certified true copy of any vital record, provided that he makes the request in writing and can extensively present information identifying the desired file.

The person whose name appears on the vital record, immediate family members and legal representatives are all entitled to claim the requested document for as long as they bear with them sufficient proof entitling them access to the record. An authentic government-issued photo I.D. and a validated signature are also needed for legal purposes.

Applications for the issuance of birth records can be done in person, via telephone or mail. Payments for the transactions can be in the form of cash or check. Fees will be collected for the processing of the documents and for records and index searches.
