Iron - Vitamin B and the Pill and Menopause - More Good Suggestions Than Good Advice
I guess since menopause itself is kind of an out of control, full throttle to half throttle hormonal ever changing ordeal, it would make sense that one day some pill does you wonders, and the next day it does nothing. That stupid pill was in fact, probably really working on what was rushing through your body the first day, and having no effect the next.
I think that's what makes me the maddest. You can't even finally get your medication right. Every time that my wife just knows she is right, wham, she is blindsided with different results. Now, we know we are better off with science (and natural treatments) then we would be without it. And I know that I am better off with the science and medication we are using on her (after all I am still alive), but what in the world are we dealing with? We just want to feel like we are getting somewhere.
Her latest great discovery is still working very well. The issue involved her thinning hair, which seemed to be due to menopause. She talked to her doctor, who was very puzzled, but suggested she try Iron. The doctor said it could work, and if it did, it might take up to a year for good results. After one week her hair stopped thinning so quickly, and then within a month it was thickening at a nearly unbelievable rate. She stopped taking it for a short time and the thinning began again. She went back on Iron and her hair began to get thicker again.
So far now, (4 months) we see wonderful improvement...for her. But, you don't know how long it will work or for who. I think it might work for some women and not for others. That's why women are all so frustrated. There is no good advice.
There is no good advice from doctors or friends or other women, there are only good suggestions about what worked one time somewhere. Another strange result we have had this Vitamin B deal. My wife has been very fatigued for a year. She sleeps too late. She is cold and hot (she is not the only one who does that of course). She has a hard time staying alert during the day. So, she has been reading about, and listening to others about Vitamin B. How it gives you more energy and moderates your metabolism, while boosting your immune system. She tried it and it worked. But even better, it has improved her moods. It has stopped her hot flashes. What's that all about? We are in a very stressful period in our lives and she is the strong one. It's cool, but she keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop. I suppose like, as so often happens, she thinks her body will change a little again and something new will happen. She hates it that she feels so good now, yet she believes it will "run out" and not work. But we are enjoying it for now. If you haven't tried it, go ahead. Maybe its just a vitamin, but so far its been a miracle drug for her.
This vitamin thing that is helping her, I am going to guess comes from the heavy periods she has developed. I think she is washing out a lot of good things from her body during each period.
Let's just examine that subject for a minute. She had her tubes tied in her twenties. But, for the last 10 years she has been on birth control pills. She has had them prescribed for good moods, bad moods, good periods, bad periods, even trying to have no period. All of them have fallen short of expectations. She is going back to her doctor to try again this week. With this last birth control pill, She has been have been having 2 periods a month for 8 days each. What's that all about? That was not the goal. However, it does kind of match up with the vitamin theory above. Wouldn't 16 days of periods per month create a need for several things? Boy isn't it just miserable.
My point is that women should understand that it is hard to find what helps you feel and function better during your menopausal symptoms. If you do, it might work sometimes and not at others. We have found a wonderful doctor that will listen carefully, accept suggestions, and cares deeply enough about her patients to really try to figure out what works. Take heart that everyone else is struggling like you and just keep trying to find the right physician. Be sure and learn to feel comfortable talking to your friends. You may have ideas that help each other.
