Is A Tummy Tuck Or Abdominal Liposuction Better For Me?

The abdomen is a commonly fatty area for many people

. Even people who are otherwise very thin often have a little round belly down on the abdomen. Pregnancy can stretch out the muscles of this area and so some people also have loose skin of the abdomen. For cosmetic surgery enthusiasts, liposuction of the abdominal area can trim down the fat, but extra skin is better handled with a tummy tuck.

Most people have at least some extra fat on the belly. This abdominal region is a classic fat storage area for both men and women, although it tends to be more pronounced on the male body. It seems to be the one area that fat just loves to pile up, regardless of who you are.

Despite what popular myths have to say, abdominal exercises do not usually help people to lose fat from the belly in particular. While the exercises, such as crunches and sit-ups, can effectively strengthen and tone the muscles underneath the fat, the fat itself can be tricky to remove.

Exercise and healthy eating is the normal avenue to weight loss, and for many people a combination of the two can be very effective. What many people don't realize is that fat is burned up rather consistently from all over the body. That means that doing a thousand crunches won't make you lose more fat from the belly in particular, but all those crunches will contribute to weight loss everywhere on the body.

Because the abdomen can be particularly troublesome, a lot of people turn to cosmetic surgeries to help them do what other weight loss efforts cannot seem to do. Two of the common ones are liposuction of the abdomen and the classic tummy tuck. It's important to differentiate between the two to know which one is the best for your particular body.

Liposuction is a fat removal surgery. With a sterile tube called a cannula, fat is sucked out of small incisions. When this is done very carefully, and if the skin is naturally elastic, the abdominal area can be noticeably sculpted through liposuction. It's important to note that only a few pounds, ideally two to five, can be safely removed this way. Even such a small amount can be noticeable, though.

A tummy tuck, on the other hand, is less about removing fat and more about removing extra skin. A long thin cut is made in the abdominal area and the skin is lifted up to reveal the muscles underneath. After the muscles have been re-positioned so that they no longer sag, the skin is stretched down and any excess skin is cut off. This is ideal for women who have had multiple pregnancies since pregnancy tends to cause these muscles to become permanently stretched out.

If you're thinking about getting cosmetic surgery in your abdominal area, it's probably a good idea to ask yourself, "Is it excess fat that's bothering me, or is it all this extra skin?" The answer to that question should tell you whether you want liposuction or a tummy tuck.
