Is College In Your Future?
For many people, a bright future starts with good education
. Even before he became President, Barack Obama spoke about the need to make education a priority. Scholarships and grants are only a small part of the education system makeover.
One familiar part of the economic meltdown is the rise in college tuition and other costs. College costs can really add up especially when money for things besides tuition and housing is considered. With high costs looming, many young adults can't afford to go to a university. A large number of these people are working mothers. Not only does educating mothers help provide for their families, but it also improves the workforce. It's important to the President and that's why he's implemented a program for scholarships for mothers. Although they are the same, many people refer to Federal Pell grants as Obama grants. To help with university costs, a student can earn more than $5,000. Before Pell grants maxed out at about $4,000. With these grants for moms, they can pay for tuition, books or any other school-related expenses.
Another worthwhile program is the American Opportunity Tax Credit. Under this incentive program, education costs up to $4,000 are cleared. At less expensive schools in particular this is a big credit. Both of these tax programs help single moms tremendously because they are traditionally low-income individuals. Another great factor is that students aren't particularly targeted based on what or where they study. Diversity is encouraged. With a few less money worries, more single mothers can attend college.
The President has demonstrated that he considers this issue a priority. The stimulus plan that passed has some provisions to make the college loan process easier. In addition, the government is focusing on helping schools improve teaching and students improve performance. Higher education at a 2-year college can be a great option, and there is emphasis being put on that fact. At a community college students can gain important knowledge as well as save money.
In a 2007 speech called Reclaiming the American Dream, the President said that making college education more available is "the best investment we can make in our future." So far Obama's actions are backing up his words. If the goal is to educate as many as possible, making grants available for mothers is a good step. Traditional and non-traditional students alike have numerous opportunities to put their education first.
