Is Dexter The Best Show On Tv?

I really don't watch that much TV. Most of what makes it on to the TV these days is garbage sitcoms, with cookie cutter, predictable and utterly unwatchable storylines. However there are a few exceptions and most of them seem to be on the pay cable networks like HBO & Showtime. One of which is Dexter, which is simply the best drama on television right now. Simply everything about this show is top notch. The actors, characters, writers, directors & photographers. Along with a quirky synopsis this show really is a must watch.

What makes Dexter so unusual and interesting? It's based around Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst with the Miami Metro Police Department. Dexter spends his work days visiting murder crime scenes and analyzing them. The strange thing is Dexter himself is a serial killer!

One basic plot twist of the show is that Dexter's father was a police officer who actually taught Dexter how to kill and get away with it. Dexter's foster father Harry saw that he was very different and discovered that Dexter simply needs to kill. His "Dark Passenger" drives him to kill, and this thirst will never simply go away. So Harry takes it upon himself to teach Dexter a "code" to live by. Where he only kills other killers, people who deserve to die.

What interests me about the Dexter character is how he leads a double life. On one side he has his "normal public life" where he's a forensics analyst with a girlfriend and a sister and on the other side he has his "dark life" where he's a serial killer. Obvious this secret life is something that no one else can know about. I enjoy how he goes about his daily life hiding his other life beneath the surface.

One comment people make regularly is how they find it very strange to find a serial killer character to be so likeable! This is the thing with Dexter, he is constantly aware how abnormal he is, but this is actually showing that he is actually more human than he realizes.

Interested? Before running out and buying the DVD's you might prefer to watch it online (check resources at the bottom of this article) for a few episodes first to see if it grabs you, so to speak.
