Is Facebook Humiliation A Great Motivator?
Is Facebook Humiliation A Great Motivator?
Facebook...A Great Motivator?
Consider this.
My wife's hairdresser & her partner were going through some photos from their recent trip to Bali the other day. As they were thumbing their way through the photos, my wife's hairdresser came across one photo in particular. It was one of those photos that are never popular.
In her words, she was white, fat and the bikinis that she had on looked awful. Note: These were her words, not mine!
She was so disgusted and unhappy with what she saw in that photo that something changed in her right then and there. Have you ever been in a situation like that? Or, has something happened to you where you've just said "enough is enough! I am sick and f*cking tired of this!!!"
In my former life I was a personal trainer. When we met clients for the first time, we'd always ask them the following question: "With 10 being heaps' and 1 being not at all', how badly do you want to change?" If the client answered 5 or 6 we knew they weren't serious. But, if they answered 9 or 10 out of 10, then we knew they were ready to change. Unfortunately some clients were so keen to change, we'd have to hold them back from over doing it, instead of pushing them!
Well, my wife's hairdresser was pissed off with that photo. Her motivation to change was a 10 out of 10 for sure after seeing it. Then, it was at that point she suddenly said something to her husband that hopefully she won't regret. It's something that I, as a Motivational Speaker, have never heard of before. It could be a new motivational technique that we could all use.
She said to her husband: "If I don't get down to a size 10 in 6 months, I will post this photo as my profile picture on facebook!". Then (to make matters worse) she jumped onto facebook and told all her friends that she was on a mission to get down to size 10 and that she would be posting THAT photo if she didn't achieve her goal.
WOW! Social humiliation is a ballsy approach to motivating yourself. The human ego hates to look bad or look stupid. But if that's the way you motivate yourself, then that's your way. There are many ways to motivate yourself to take action. But 1st, you have to be unhappy with your current set of circumstances to create action.
I think the facebook method here will certainly help my wife's hairdresser quickly find out who her supportive friends are versus the ones' who say you can't. Tip: hang around with the supportive ones!
The reason I've shared this is because it's a very different way of motivating one's self, isn't it? How unhappy are you with something in your life right now10 out of 10? How badly do you want to change your situation? Are you prepared to make a big call about a goal on facebook?
I'll let you know how she goes.
