HTML5 is said to change the mobile web browsing experience because of its improved user interface and video quality. As the network speed is improving, users would like to watch videos directly on the HTML5 based browser instead of downloading a separate app, which will acquire space in the memory of the device.

If we talk about mobile games, a lot of them rely on 3D graphics libraries, available in native applications. So, mobile gaming will be one area that might not be impacted by HTML5 based applications.

Plug-ins and web app platforms have extended the capabilities of HTML. But, these add-ons consume lot of processing power. And this is one reason that many tablet and smartphone makers opted to restrict the support of media plugins, as they consumed lot of battery life.
The features of HTML5 will make users switch to web browser, as they will be getting a rich mobile media experience combined with good battery life.
But, it cannot be said that mobile applications will eventually disappear. They will still remain a strong part of the ecosystem, as they are fun to use.
