Is It Ok To Use A Knife To Cut A Cigar?

An incredible diversity of ways exists to cut your cigars

. If you've ever watched any old movies, you've likely seen people bite, tear, stab, cut and rip the end off a cigar. Of course, these can be used to remove the cap from the cigar, but the chance of you ruining the smoke is pretty good. In fact, the question of cutting the cigar can be just as confusing as choosing a lighter. Should you use a pipe lighter? What happens if you use a Zippo? Much like lighting your cigar, cutting it requires great care and a bit of skill. However, it can be an enjoyable process, nonetheless.

You most certainly can use a knife to cut your cigar. Knives can be sharpened and maintained quite easily, so you do not have to worry about a dull blade. However, if you do choose to make use of your knife, make sure that you do not oil the blade, as these oils can collect on the cigar tip and provide a rather unpleasant taste. In addition, if you choose to use a knife to cut your cigar, make sure that you have very steady hands and a good eye. You'll need to make the cut clean and even, as a ragged hole can lead to numerous other problems. As with using a pipe lighter, using the tool correctly is half the battle.

Other tools that you can use include your teeth, scissors and even piercers, though all of these have drawbacks, as well. For instance, ripping the cap from the cigar with your teeth leaves you with a mouthful of tobacco and a great gaping hole in the cigar. Using scissors can also leave you with a ragged opening, while using a piercer provides a very small hole in which oil and tar can collect and stream into your mouth while smoking. Care should be used when selecting your cutter, just as when selecting a pipe lighter to use on your cigar.

Of course, the best option is to purchase a cigar cutter. You'll find several different types, but the guillotine style cutter is the best option out there. V-cutters can leave ragged openings, while other types of cutters can have similarly detrimental effects. Choose a guillotine cutter that matches your pipe lighter and you'll have a stylish way of opening your cigars that does not leave problems in its wake.
