Is It Time For A Career Change
When is the right time to change careers? Never, every couple of years, or every time you get a case of the Monday morning blues'? (In which case, could be quite often for some!) Unfortunately in this current economic climate, this decision can also be made for us. Redundancies are rife these days, so it comes as no surprise that many people are gripping onto their jobs for dear life, despite being extremely dissatisfied. But when it comes to deciding whether it's time for a complete career change or simply a new job, it basically comes down to job satisfaction and getting that work/life balance just right for you.
So, how satisfied are you in your current position? Are you enjoying your day-to-day tasks? Have you progressed as far as you had expected to in the company? Perhaps you feel like you work for hours on end, but with little reward? If these are questions you have been mulling over for the past couple of months then maybe it's time for a change, because is your job really worth sacrificing your happiness over?
Whether you are thinking of jumping ship, hoping to set sail onto pastures new or have been unfortunately pushed, just remember the career world is your oyster! Perhaps you have always wanted to start your own business or work in a particular field? Perhaps you are looking to travel further abroad? With the correct permits, you can work in practically any country you choose for a while.
Taking on a new challenge such as a career change can be exciting, but also very daunting. But with careful thought, research and planning it can turn out to be the best thing you ever did! Everyone looks for different things in a career. Some are purely motivated by money, whilst for others it's more about the actual job or company. Or maybe you want to stay in a similar kind of role, but just with another company or sector?
There are so many different avenues one can look down when it comes to seeking a new career/job. If you are looking for a new direction and don't know where to start, then go back to basics what are your interests, skills and experience? Where do your strengths lie? If you feel you may not have the right qualifications or experience then look into further education and training as an option - you are never too old to learn!
Really do your research. Talk to family and friends about their jobs. There are countless career guidance services available too. The internet is a great source of information, from career advice and help with CV's, to the plethora of job sites which could contain your dream career!
When it finally comes to taking the plunge, the best advice is to always look before you leap, well, providing you have chance to that is! Take the time it takes to find that job or career that you know you will enjoy. Because at the end of the day we do tend to spend most of our lives at work, so you may as well find something that you enjoy doing....unless of course you enjoy being miserable at work?!
