Is Pr Halting The March Of The Tories?

It is commonly acknowledged that Tony Blair waltzed in to 10 Downing Street with

the considerable support of a very carefully planned and effective public relations campaign, engineered by the three wise directors of communications, Philip Gould, Peter Mandelson and Alastair Campbell. 13 years later and David Cameron is retracing the exact steps of the former Labour prime minister, with strong media relations and an emphasis on character. The only trouble is, the public have got wise and times have changed?

Cameron a former PR man, as head of communications with Carlton ITV, has recently initiated a barrage of public attacks on the Labour leadership and in particular, Gordon Brown. Many of these broadsides have been implemented through transparent PR stunts, press spin and phony looking billboards.

Ever since Camerons election as Conservative leader he has been constantly labelled with suspicions of spin. As Sam Coates reported in The Times back in 2007; David Cameron faces new accusations of favoring spin over substance after producing a pamphlet on society designed like a car manual.

Whereas before Cameron and the Conservatives were able to conceal their spin behind the ineptitude of the Labour party, now they are in the main glare of the voting electorate their claims & counter claims are starting to look a little flimsy. Just six weeks before a national election they are failing to explain their policies to an expectant public while appearing to ramp up the spin even further to cover their own fallibility. Even members of his own party are criticizing his over use of spin; Norman Tebbit told The Daily Star recently that Cameron was all spin and no substance, adding that his reliance on slick PR - including a recent, much-ridiculed poster campaign - had backfired.

Some of the PR stunts of late have smacked of desperation, particularly the budget day caper of Conservative members sat in a taxi wearing face masks of Brown, Darling and Harman. This type of stunt is transparent and represents the Tories as frivolous in a period of political austerity. The conservatives are misreading the current mood; this probably explains why their poll rating has falling drastically in the last few months, as revealed in the New Statesman this week: The two per cent lead is the Tories' joint lowest since December 2008, when Brown's handling of the financial crisis gave Labour a significant poll boost.

With David Cameron at the helm, ably supported by former News of the World Editor Andy Coulson, as his Director of Communications it is bewildering that the Tories resemble a party in need of PR consultancy. But their inability to judge the mood and intelligence of the voters and constant reliance on transparent PR stunts is undermining their push for power. It could be time for some crisis management.
