Is The Need For Senior Care Hereditary?

The need for senior care isn't exactly hereditary

, but some of the reasons that families might be interested in services like in-home-care or other types of elder care may be caused by conditions that are in fact genetic. In other cases, this need may be one of convenience and nothing more. So while there are some aspects of this issue that are related to genetics and family history, in most cases it wouldn't be correct to state that the need is hereditary per se.

The primary need for senior care that could be considered hereditary is issues related to dementia. Dementia refers to a class of diseases that affect a person's ability to think critically and to perform even the simplest of daily tasks. This includes Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and more than 50 other though rare types of dementia.

People with these conditions may need help with remembering to take important medications, bathing and grooming, cooking and basic home maintenance, transportation to appointments, help with incontinence and in many cases, mobility assistance.

However, having one of these hereditary conditions or having someone in your family who did/does doesn't mean that you'll be any more likely to need senior care yourself. This is because many families either don't need the extra help, or because the disease simply hasn't progressed to a point yet that would require care. In fact, the following are two common reasons that families opt to get in home care or other senior care services, and often there's really no "negative" stimulus involved:

1.) Convenience

Senior care doesn't have to be in response to a disease or illness it can be about nothing more than convenience. Some elderly people and their families may simply find it better to have an additional party on hand to provide different types of care and companionship. In fact, this is a common practice and is one that allows families much more free time together.

2.) Relief

Some families may already be providing care and simply need relief from time to time for vacations or other needs of caregivers. Relief work is a big part of what many senior care and in home care agencies do.

So while these reasons for seeking care aren't hereditary in any way, they do tend to help everyone in the family; even if it is only for convenience. Unfortunately, there is one more reason that people get senior care, and that is because they don't have anyone in their lives that can help care for them anymore. Sometimes this can be as a result of other family members being located far away, or it could be that the senior in question has essentially outlived the people that could have cared for them. In this case, in home care is often the first choice, as it allows a person to live independently and keep their dignity intact for as long as possible.
