Vaginitis is a disorder in women's vaginal area associated with irritation and/or inflammation of the vagina
. Vaginitis is a very common condition affecting millions of women each year. There are three main types of vaginal infections:
- candida vaginitis (yeast infection)
- trichomonas vaginitis ("trich")
- bacterial vaginosis (BV).
Yeast Infection is also called candidiasis. This type of vaginitis is caused by a fungus and is the second most common type of the disorder.
Protozoan is a type of infection that is also known as trichomoniasis and it is considered a sexually transmitted disease (STD). This type is the least common and comprises 3% to 5% of all vaginitis infections.
The bacterial type of infection is caused when healthy vaginal organisms are replaced by bacteria. It is considered to be the most common type of vaginitis.
Vaginitis Symptoms
Infections in the vaginal area can cause a variety of symptoms, for example fishy odor, irritation, abnormal or increased discharge, painful urination, vaginal bleeding and itching, Women that suffer from vaginitis may have some or all of these symptoms. If you have one or more of these symptoms, visit your doctor so that you can be tested.
Vaginitis Causes
Vaginitis has several causes. The most common causes are
- protozoan infection,
- fungal infection,
- bacterial infections,
- contact dermatitis,
- allergic reactions.
Vaginitis affects millions of women and it is one of the main reasons women visit their doctor.
Vaginitis Treatment
There are several treatments for vaginitis. The treatment that will be used depends on the cause of the infection:
- Bacterial vaginosis are in most cases treated orally or intra-vaginally with prescribed medication.
- Yeast infections are also treated orally or intra-vaginally with either prescription or over-the-counter antifungal medications.
- Trichomonas infection is commonly treated with a prescribed oral antibiotic.
Vaginitis Prevention
- Keep good hygiene by keeping the vaginal area clean using a mild soap and dry the vaginal area well.
- You should avoid douching as well as irritating agents like harsh soaps and feminine hygiene sprays. When using douches you run the risk of disrupting the normal balance of vaginal organisms and should be avoided.
- You should also avoid spreading bacteria from the rectum to the vagina by wiping front to back after going to the bathroom.
- You should practice abstinence or safe sex and avoid multiple sex partners. Latex condoms, when used right and consistently, can reduce the risk of transmission of STDs.
- Avoid clothing that can trap moisture, such as panty hose without a cotton crotch, tight jeans etc.
