Is Your Home Ready For Winter?
We have already seen the devastating effects of flooding in parts of the UK and sadly
many people have lost many of their personal belongings and contents as they have either been washed away or ruined beyond repair.
Winter hasn't really taken a grip yet so you have time to carry out so fundamental checks on your house which could help protect your home from the ravages of winter and save you money.
* Check that pipes are properly lagged and insulated. Frozen pipes lead to burst pipes and the devastating effects of water are not only caused by rivers bursting their banks. Burst water pipes can cause hundreds of pounds worth of damage to your home if they are left un-lagged.
* Check that your water tank is well insulated otherwise in freezing temperatures you are simply throwing your money away as your hot water tank struggles to keep the water sufficiently hot for use.
* Check you roof for slipped or missing tiles. The high winds the UK has been blasted with may have made some slates move. Call in the professionals if you see that your tiles have slipped or are missing. Slipped or missing tiles will leave your roof and loft open to the elements which can mean damp.
* Check that your gutters are free of debris, build-up of leaves are a major problem which will send water cascading down the walls which can also cause damp. Broken guttering should be repaired or replaced.
* If you have large trees near your home call a tree surgeon if you think they have become unstable in the high winds. Large branches which could potentially cause damage should be removed.
* Don't forget that should the UK be hit with a real icy blast and several inches of snow or more flooding there could be local power cuts so stock up on batteries for torches, candles and tins of food.
* Most contents insurance provides cover for freezer contents, if you are unsure about your policy a quick phone call to your insurers is better sooner rather than later. If you do experience a power cut resist the temptation to keep opening the freezer and fridge to see if your food is okay, the more times you do that the less likely the food will remain frozen correctly.
* Watch the television listen to the radio or check online for weather warnings in your area and be prepared to batten down the hatches the best you can without putting yourself in danger.
* If flood warnings are issued move as much of your furniture and treasured possessions upstairs, if you have one, if not ask neighbours or relatives to store your possessions for you. Look out for elderly neighbours and assist them in anyway you can.
* Check your contents and buildings insurance policies to make sure you have adequate and sufficient cover. Read the small print and look for exclusions and restrictions, if in any doubt phone your insurer and ask for their professional advice.
