Is Your Job Causing A Failed Hearing Test?

If you are unsure what caused you to fail a hearing test

, you may want to take a look at your job. Though every state has rules in place about how to protect the ears from damaging sounds, that does not mean you are protected from these risks on a regular basis. Even some sounds that are at a low volume, but that you hear all the time can contribute to lasting damage to the inner ear. So much so is this possible that you could have permanent damage to your ability to hear if you are exposed on an ongoing basis to these sounds.

Decibels and Time Length

In order to provide you with some idea of what is okay to hear at work so you don't have to fail a hearing test in the future, consider the range of decibels and for how long during the course of the day it is okay to hear sounds at that level. For example, if you work an eight hour day, you likely spend a lot of time around sounds. If those sounds are at 90 decibels and below, you will be just find. This is about the same as the sound of a hair dryer, power lawn mower, or traffic. If sounds are louder than this, you could be at risk.

What if sounds are at 95 decibels at your work place? That level of sound is about the same as a running motorcycle. At that level, you can only be exposed to the sound for about half the time, or four hours, for it to not cause any lasting damage to your ears. That's not very loud and that's already cut your work day in half.

What about running power tools? If you were using a hand drill at work, that equates to about 100 decibels of sound. At that level, you cannot be exposed to the sound for more than two hours. More than this will cause damage to your inner ear, which could lead to permanent hearing loss. Keep in mind these levels are not just random numbers. Rather, they are set by law and are enforced as well. You have the right to protect your ability to hear and often, workers compensation insurance provides you with protection from these risks.

If you have had a hearing test that did not go well, your doctor can tell you what steps to take to overcome the risk. Keep in mind that you should have proper screenings at least one time a year if you work in a noisy location, no matter what decibel of sound you are exposed to on a regular basis.
