Is Your Time Up?

What is Your Sense of Time? We all have heard over and over again about the importance of setting goals

. And, indeed, setting goals is important if you want to get anywhere. We have also heard about planning ahead. And, indeed, we know that we need to plan ahead if we are going to reach our goals. The problem is when to plan ahead and when to work in the present.

Sometimes we can get so wrapped up in the future that we miss the opportunities of the present. We are already looking ahead to next week when it is only Monday of this week. Is your time so tightly scheduled that you can't make changes? If there was an opportunity to meet someone that could be important to your business is there enough flexibility built into your schedule that you could make that meeting?

We all know that time is a precious commodity. Or at least we think so in the United States. We don't want to waste a minute and we try to plan everything in our lives. We buy day planners and electronic calendars so we are sure to be where we are supposed to be at the right time. If we aren't careful, we can schedule ourselves to death and miss opportunities along the way. If you are so focused on tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or the next week, you may miss something that is right in front of you because you are too busy to slow down and see it.

How do you strike a balance between doing everything you need to do in your plan and not losing the present? Build a little flexibility in your schedule. Try not to micro-schedule every second of the day. You never know when things may not go as planned or when you might need some time to do something you didn't necessarily plan, but is important. Try to be flexible. Does everything you have on your schedule absolutely have to be done today? If an opportunity arose, could you move something around without losing site of what you wanted to accomplish for that day, week, or month? Time is fluid and cannot be recaptured. Opportunities are often the same way and sometimes they can only be captured once or remain lost forever. Don't lose track of time or your opportunities.
