Is Your Web Content Working For You?

Whether it is to entertain, sell a product or offer a service the content you put

on your website sends a strong message that all visitors to your site will see. It is important to be sure that your content is effective and clearly guides readers toward the goal you have in mind for them. Be sure your goal is clear and that when you create your web content you are leading internet users toward that goal.

Website visitors will decide in a matter of seconds whether they see what they are looking for when they look at your site. For this reason, headlines are a very important part of your content. Whether it's the main headline of your site or the title of a blog post, your headlines must be clear and must tell them what they are going to find if they read on. Catchy headlines are good, but make sure they don't mess up the message or confuse the reader about what they will be reading.

So you've hooked the reader with your headline, now you have to keep them with the content in your introduction. The reader must be able to determine in the first few lines what they will learn by reading the rest of your content. Will you meet their need? Make sure they have a reason to keep reading. Show them that you might solve their problem if they read one.

The online attention span of most users is quite limited. With all of the options at the click of a button it's easy for people to take a glance and then move on. If your content is too wordy it can be overwhelming and will cause visitors to quickly move on. Paragraphs and sentences should be short. Writing should be aimed between a fourth and eighth grade reading level. That may seem odd, but this is truly where most content is aimed so that it is easy for all readers to understand.

You must choose your words carefully when crafting your content. Be careful not to use a ton of technical terms that readers may be confused by. You are the expert on the subject, but you don't want to make readers go elsewhere because they don't understand your jargon. Using small sections with subheadings, bullet points and lists is a great way to simplify the content to make the readers experience easier.

You can connect to your site visitors by giving your content some personality. Content that is full of keywords written for search engines can be hard to read. People will not connect to this type of writing. Make your content conversational and casual enough to draw in reader and make them feel like they know you. Especially when it comes to blogging, allow for comments so that the content can be interactive.

Finally, be sure you end by summarizing what you have tried to teach your reader and finish with a call to action. What is it you want the reader of the online content to do now? Be clear and guide them to the one next step you want them to take after reading. Make it an easy step for them to take and you just might find that your content was just what they were looking for and they will probably be back for more!
