It Doesn't Take Much To Make Your Employees Happy
The legendary hall of fame baseball manager Casey Stengel once said that the key
to managing a baseball team was to identify the five people on the team who liked you and the five people who didn't. He said the key was to make the other 15 guys on his team happy and keep them away from the five who didn't like you. Stengel and his New York Yankees of the late 40s and 50s won seven World Series titles with that philosophy, so there is clearly a reason that he won these rings. He knew how to control player morale.
Most of the time, office managers are responsible for the low morale in the typical workplace. They might not realize they are bringing the office down, but it happens and there needs to be a way to remedy that situation before the poison spreads through the company. A report from the Corporate Leadership Counsel in 2005 showed that nearly 70 percent of employee morale issues pertained to the dealings, or the lack thereof, with management.
Morale is hard to define and the level of morale will never be able to be seen in the company's bottom line, but you will see it in the production of your business. Happy workers make for a group that is excited to come to work every day instead of counting the seconds on Sunday night when that dreaded alarm clock goes off on Monday morning meaning another day at the job.
If you are a manager of a company, it is important to go beyond the normal ways of rewarding employees. The Employee of the Month award is boring and usually just offends the employees who don't win it. Bonus checks are nice, but most employees expect them and are ticked off when they aren't as much as they expected. Go beyond the zone of the expected and give them something different. They will feel more rewarded that way and appreciate their job even more.
It isn't necessary or even possible to make sure that all of your employees can be appeased, but as long as you employees feel like they have a say in all matters within the company they will be a lot happier and the boost in morale will no doubt make a difference in your business.
