It Is Easy To Measure Body Fat At Home These Days
We are all so used to using the scales to measure our weight and then worry about being fat
, but we need to remember that the weight is not always the most important thing. These days it is advisable to use a fat analyser, or fat monitor to measure body fat. This will give an accurate assessment of your overall fitness level, as opposed to just your weight.
From a health standpoint, the traditional body mass index (BMI - weight/height) is not very informative since body composition does not enter into the calculation. Recent evidence has also suggested that body fat distribution is critical for accurate assessment of various health risks; therefore the overall level of adiposity is needed as a starting point. In addition, since with physical training, body fat can decline while muscle mass can increase, net changes in body weight cannot reliably predict body fat levels. Changes in body fat levels can be followed as part of charting progress during training, and during a weight loss programme supported by a healthy diet and exercise plan.
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)
With this method, a fat calculator device sends a tiny electrical charge through your hands or feet and uses the data to determine how much fat you are carrying and how much water, with muscles and lean tissues being mostly water. To do the calculation, the unit needs to know your gender, age, and weight. These units should not be used by anybody with a pacemaker, but should be safe for most others.
Features of BIA Fat Monitors
Look for memory features so don't have to put in your basic data each time, and if others will use it get a unit that remembers multiple users, such as measuring body fat for an athlete or a child.
Getting Accurate Readings with BIA Monitors
You must not be dehydrated - do not use first thing in the morning or immediately after a workout or after consuming alcohol. Use 3 hours after a meal and after emptying your bladder. Women may experience fluctuations with retaining water, and those on diuretics may see inaccurate readings. You need to weigh yourself without clothes.
Skinfold Calliper Method
With the calliper method, you take pinches of your skin at three points on your body and calculate the fat percentage from those readings. New electronic callipers sense the right pressure and do the calculations for you, plus store data for multiple users. The Skinfold calliper is a device which measures the thickness of a fold of your skin with its underlying layer of fat.
By doing this at the key locations can be a quite accurate representative of the total amount of fat that is on your body, it is also possible to estimate the total per cent of body fat. It is important to keep holding firmly the fold of skin with the fingers so that the callipers are measuring just the thickness of the fold of skin, in order to accurately measure body fat.
