Italian Politics: the Neverending Circus
Italian politics, to the outsider, seems to be an never-ending colorful and crazy circus of the corrupt and the controversial. In this reporter's lifetime (no, I'm not old enough to remember Benito Mussolini) there have been porn stars who served as politicians and politicians that might as well have been porn stars. It's no joke - Italian politics - there is serious unrest in the country at the moment, but it's hard not to at least crack a smile every now and then at the ongoing flagrant antics of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his many infamous dalliances with young actresses and models.
As if the blatant borderline-pedophile behaviour weren't enough, the seemingly Teflon-coated leader has spent tens thousands of euros of taxpayers money on his affairs, and it appears that no matter how many times he is caught flagrante delicto, he manages to elude being called to answer for his many sins. The latest scandal involves a barely 18 year old Moroccan model who claims that Berlusconi paid her cash in exchange for sexual favors, but somehow the silver-tongued Silvio has survived a no-confidence vote in Parliament this week which prompted accusations of bribery and corruption regarding the voting.
Ironically, two female MPs have been accused of accepting bribes or other compensation and of selling out their parties to keep the Prime Minister in office. Meanwhile there has been rioting in the streets of Rome, with cars being set alight in front of government buildings, bringing to mind another Roman leader who many centuries ago calmly played his fiddle while Rome burned. It seems that the Italian people have had enough and fortunately for them it does seem that the Berlusconi years are drawing to an end as the lame-duck government steadily loses its power.
It's one thing to vote in a porn star to Parliament - I'm referring to Ilona Staller, "La Cicciolina", who successfully ran for Parliament in the 1980's - and quite another to become an aspiring porn star after being elected and spending taxpayer's money on peccadilloes in Rome hotels and private villas. Perhaps soon, hotels in Rome can go back to being used for tourists if the citizens don't burn them all down first.
