Items That Are Barred From Transport With Couriers
Considering the importance of interstate commerce to a nation's economy
, there are many laws, regulations, and rules regarding the operation of courier services. Transportation is the lifeblood of an economy. Protecting the integrity of a country's transportation services is in its best interest. That is why there are laws pertaining to what kinds of goods courier companies are barred from transporting, and how they are allowed to transport non contraband goods.
Delivery companies are good at what they do, and unscrupulous people will look to take advantage of that fact. As a general rule of thumb, any item that is not legal to possess is also not legal to ship with a delivery service. One example of this is illegal narcotics. There are many instances of federal authorities seizing large amounts of illegal drugs from trucks, planes, and ships. In these cases, the vehicles are impounded and all involved will be arrested. If it is found that the delivery company was involved in this business knowingly, then the company's leaders can be arrested as well.
Hazardous chemicals are also banned, except for a select few carriers. An accident while transporting hazardous chemicals can have devastating consequences. It can cause major transportation problems during the clean-up. Also, there can be serious environmental consequences from a hazardous chemical spill. That is why only certified carriers are authorized to move such goods.
Medical supplies and human remains also require special handling. It seems awkwardly amusing at first, but there are reasons why courier companies ask if you are shipping any human body parts in your package. There are serious health concerns, with a great risk of spreading communicable diseases. Also, people could be trying to cover-up a particularly heinous crime by shipping body parts to different parts of the country.
Certain plants and livestock are also banned. It is important to know the laws of the country and municipality where you are shipping. Moving plants and animals can also inadvertently move infectious diseases, thus destroying crops or herds at the destination point. Some animals, especially those listed as endangered, are simply illegal to possess. Therefore, they are illegal to ship as well.
If you have any questions about the legality of your cargo, then you are advised to check with the proper governmental authorities before shipping. Courier services can be held liable for shipping illegal goods. Therefore, they will do their due diligence to make sure that their services are not used for illegal purposes. Learn the laws where you are shipping, or you can face serious consequences.
