Items To Bring For A Triathlon
One of the first things is often overlooked, but one you go one without it you will never go a race without bringing it
. A bucket of water that is placed next to your bike may seem weird, but it is necessary.
If the swimming portion of the race is done in the ocean, you will run through sand to get to your bike. No one wants sand in their shoes, it is uncomfortable, painful, and causes blisters.
Having a bucket of water next to your bike allows you to rinse your feet of any sand or dirt before you put your shoes on. Wipe your feet dry with a towel and your feet will be clean and comfortable for the bike ride.
After your feet are clean, you're going to want clean, dry socks. After swimming, you don't want to slip into your bike shoes without socks, or with wet socks, it's very uncomfortable.
Make sure you have a dry pair at your bike station so you can change into them. It may take half a minute of your time, but while you are cycling and running it will pay off.
This may seem like a long time for shorter races, but dry socks can prevent blisters, discomfort, and athlete's foot. And you will definitely perform better on foot if you have dry socks on.
Make sure that your shoes are ready right when you get there too. Many runners choose to wear lace-less shoes that fasten tight with the pull of a string, this saves time and makes it easier to put them on during the hectic transitions.
You also need to make sure you remember to bring a hat and sunglasses. If you do not like these items and find them distracting then ignore this.
Usually races happen on hot sunny days when the sun is glaring down. Making sure you have sunglasses and some sort of visor will improve your vision and prevent sunburn on your face.
Speaking of sun burn, you should also put on sunscreen before the race. You're going to be out in the sun for several hours so you should take the necessary measure to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.
The next thing to make sure you have is a rate chest strap or monitor. Racers typically use this for the bicycle and running portion of their training and like to have it during the events as well.
If the monitor is hooked onto your bike, check to make sure it works by rotating your front tire and ensuring the screen turns on. If it is attached to your chest you need to decide how to carry it and when to put it on.
If you wear a wet suit, you can have it strapped to your chest under the suit and not have any problems, but if you don't wear a wet suit it can get in the way of your stroke and may even be ripped off. Others just choose to put it on when they got onto their bikes; either way, make sure you have it with you and ready to go.
Racers should also have a good supply of food and drink for the sports. You may want to have a quick bite to eat between events, or even during running or cycling.
Keep a few spare energy bars in your gym bag at each transition station. This will allow for easy access to the snacks without slowing you down.
The next thing to ensure is that you have at least two full bottles on your bicycle. You should have bottle holders on your frame, and the bottles full of liquid should be securely in these holders.
Most athletes choose to have one bottle full of water and another full of an energy fuel like Gatorade. What you put in the second bottle is up to you; just make sure that you have enough liquids to stay hydrated during the entire event.
