Jabal al-Nour, a Magnet for the Faithful
In Saudi Arabia's Hejaz region in the environs of Mecca lies the sacred mountain known as Jabal al-Nour, which translates as Mountain of Light'. Muslims believe that that this hill was the site where the Holy Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. The mountain is a major attraction for pilgrims and many Muslims performing Hajj take the time to visit this sacred site.
The Prophet is said to have sought seclusion in the Cave of Hira on the mountain, a small recess in the Jabal al-Nour, dejected with the evil He perceived in society. The actual cave is a hollow measuring no more than 4 yards by 1.75 yards, but the Prophet is said to have retreated to this location for extended periods of time, and also brought other believers to the site to engage in meditation.
The first revelation is thought to have occurred in 610 on what is known as the Night of Power, when the Angel Gabriel appeared to convey the message of Islam. The entire series of revelations was received by the Prophet Muhammad and communicated to the world at large through his adopted son who visited Him in the cave.
The Mountain of Light is a revered site for Muslims who recognize it as the location where their religion originated. Often pilgrims performing Hajj visit Jabal al-Nour and take time to pray at the site. Frequently devotees also visit other shrines in the locality such as the Hill of Arafat. Over the years Jabal al-Nour has maintained its status as an important pilgrimage site for Muslims.
The Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, must be undertaken at least once by every able-bodied Muslim in their lifetime, unless they lack the resources to do so. The journey to Mecca is usually undertaken in groups, signifying the unity of Muslims. Today, numerous airlines and sea-going vessels have special packages for Muslims performing Hajj. The government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia undertakes responsibility for organizing the pilgrimage and provides facilities for the pilgrims.
