Jaisalmer, The Golden City

Nicknamed as the Golden City Jaisalmer is one of the most picturesque and romantic settings in India

. Located in Indias Rajasthan state and standing on a crest of yellow sandstone with the Jaisalmer Fort as its focal point, the town has retained its mystical allure to the present day. Jaisalmer contains numerous finely crafted temples and houses among its other attractions.

The history of Jaisalmer stretches back to ancient times, with most of its inhabitants identifying themselves as Bhatti Rajputs. Initially this tribe was native to Punjab, deriving its name from a warrior ancestor called Bhatti. The tribe was eventually driven southwards by its enemies and found a home in the Indian desert where it has remained ever since. The ruler Deoraj a renowned Bhatti prince is given the distinction of founding the dynasty of Jaisalmer.

Naturally no trip to Jaisalmer is complete without a visit to Jaisalmer Fort. This magnificent creation was constructed by Jaisal, a Bhatti Rajput ruler in 1156. Located on Trikuta Hill the fort has witnessed numerous battles in its centuries of existence. During the day the forts immense sandstone walls look a leonine tawny shade, transforming into a mystical honey-gold with the sunset. The fort is very much inhabited even today with a quarter of the citys populace still living inside the premises of the fort. The imposing royal palace, situated in the interior of the fort is also a major attraction.

Seven beautifully constructed Jain temples are situated inside the fort, dating to between the 12th and 15th centuries. Corridors and walkways connect these temples. The first temple that can be reached by a tourist is the one devoted to Chandraprabhu who is a Jain god identified as the eighth tirthankar. The representation of this god is the moon, and this temple constructed in 1509 is composed of fine stones. The other temples are also worth exploring.

A camel safari should be on the itinerary of every visitor, taking the guest out into the desert. Interesting merchandise to be found in Jaisalmer includes elaborate textiles with exquisite embroidery, items constructed from camel leather and silver jewellery.
