Jama Masjid An Epitome Of Enthralling Mughal Architecture

Old Delhi is a historical city in Delhi, Indias largest metropolis

, founded by the famous Emperor Shah Jahan. He is the very emperor who built the Taj Mahal in Agra, Indias most renowned landmark and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Old Delhi is a former capital of the Mughals, where an influential Islamic empire existed from 16th century to 19th century.

About 5000 artisans were used to create Jama Masjid which was completed in 1656. It comprises of two soaring minarets, each 41 metres in height, and three massive domes. The spacious mosque itself spans 27 metres in width and 80 metres in length and can easily accommodate thousands of devotees.

Jama Masjids architecture is indeed a striking spectacle you simply cannot miss during a sightseeing tour in Delhi. The mosque is made of red sandstones and can be entered through three lofty ornate gateways led by three striking stairways running from north, east and south. The domes of the roof are covered in white and black marble contrasting the ruddy shades of its exterior walls below. You could see arched entrances and partially marbled walls within the mosque. Even the floor is specifically marked with black marble resembling the Muslim prayer mats.

From inside the hall when you look outward you could see the ornate cusped arches overlapping as it goes along, creating spellbinding vistas. Just as much as the exterior even the interior of Jama Masjid is exquisitely decorated in charming designs and you will also find calligraphy adorning the nearby buildings. The mosque enshrines several religiously significant relics and artefacts including a copy of Quran scribed on deerskin, prophets mementos and relics of Muhammad.
