The black Iberian pig, which is also known as pata negra or black hoof, is closely linked to a Mediterranean ecosystem called dehesa. Do you know what is dehesa? They are large field with sparse oaks or holm oaks that produce acorns and low yields of cereal. It can be found in the south and west of Spain.
Black Iberian Pigs preserved their habitat rather than destroying it by cleaning the land from unwanted grasses and fertilize the field in return for the acorns from oaks.
In every hectare of acorn, there's no two more pigs are allowed to stay since the trees needed to feed the pigs. If the time comes that the acorns will run out, it can't feed all the pigs anymore because it will take a minimum of forty years to yield a reasonable amount of acorns again.
