Job Outlook for Veterinary Careers

If you are thinking of going into the veterinary field

, you're probably wondering about the job outlook for veterinary careers. Job outlook is something that any prospective student should be concerned about. This will determine what your future will look like when you get out of school and how difficult your job search will be. Fortunately, the job outlook for veterinarians and veterinary assistants looks very positive for the coming years.

The job outlook for veterinary assistants depends on the job outlook for veterinarians, obviously, because there has to be a veterinarian in order for there to be an assistant. Veterinary assistants do things like answer phones, clean exam rooms, disinfect cages, feed animals, provide post-operative care for animals and schedule appointments. Employment for veterinarians is expected to grow at a faster pace than most other occupations in the next ten years or so. Right now veterinary assistants earn an average wage of around $11 per hour, but with industry-wide job growth this is expected to improve as well. And since this career does not require a college degree, many people are able to qualify for these jobs with a high school diploma or only some college.

The job outlook for veterinarians is excellent. In 2006 the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that employment for veterinarians would increase by 35 percent over the following ten years. The employment opportunities are especially good in cities and suburbs where a lot of pet owners live, but there are also job opportunities for veterinarians in rural areas where there are a lot of ranches and farms with large animals. There are veterinarian jobs with the federal government as well.

There are many reasons to go into the veterinary industry. Most people choose to enter these professions because they love animals and enjoy the work, and obviously these are good enough reasons. But knowing that there is an excellent job outlook over the next decade or so makes it an even better time to make the move into veterinary medicine and begin doing what you love for a living.
