Job change disasters and how to avoid them

Unfortunately most people never quite manage it. They try and make the leap in two jumps rather than in a single bound. They go halfway across the canyon and fall to their deaths like Coyote from Roadrunner.

You can practically hear the pause as they plunge.

So what is a job change disaster? Well it usually results in someone jumping from the frying pan into the fire. It's most commonly found when you make a change of employer but are effectively doing the same job. This is the most common scenario.

This comes about because people do not understand career development. Nor do they understand what career would be right for them in the first place.

The mistake people make is looking at where they have been. They look to their qualifications, to their work experience, to their skills. But if that's your approach then you are likely to end up with the same result. Same dress slightly different colour.

To really understand what career you were simply born to do you need to tap into your personality. You need to look inside, not behind you. You need to go deep.

You see it's impossible to be successful at something unless it is in harmony with your core personality. I have came across people who were doing a job for the money and their attitude was "I'm going to stick this out, even though I hate it till I make some money and then I'm going to tell them where to shove it."

This never really works out. Most people never make the money because to be successful you generally have to enjoy what you do and to sustain success you absolutely must work in harmony with your core personality type.

So your career development depends upon you accepting this simple fact and doing something about it, otherwise you just go from the frying pan into the fire.

So don't end up like Coyote. Make sure you start your career development process with a deep understanding of what career is right for you.

It takes a lot of thought and work and effort but a few hours spent in this part of the exercise will make the rest of your journey a pleasure. it's a bit like getting a puncture on a car. You could either walk the next ten miles to the town or you could take 30 mins to change the type and drive to the town.

Most people, when it comes to their career, tend to walk to the town cursing their car. it's bonkers I know but it makes life a lot easier for the few people who know what's going on.

if you know how the system works then you have an advantage over all the other candidates and that's not a bad thing.
