John Abraham - Bollywood Actor
John attended Bombay Scottish school in Mumbai
. He joined Jai Hind College and later completed his MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. He also has MMS degree from Mumbai Educational Trust (MET). He was also a student at Kishore Namit Kapoor acting lab in his modeling days.
Abraham started his career with the music video of a song called Surma by a World Famous Punjabi singer named Jazzy B. Then he went off with media firm Time & Space Media Entertainment Promotions Ltd., which, however, closed down due to financial problems.
Later, he worked for Enterprises Nexus as a media planner. In 1999, he won the Gladrags Manhunt Contest and went to Philippines for Manhunt International, where he won second place. Following this, he was signed on by Carrie Models in Singapore and later in Hong Kong, Londonand New York City.
He also appeared in a number of commercial advertisements and in music videos for singers like Pankaj Udhas, Hans Raj Hans and Babul Supriyo. To improve his acting skills, Abraham joined Kishore Namit Kapoor acting lab and completed a course on acting while juggling modelling assignments.
A successful model in his early days, John started his acting career with Jism(2003) a thriller opposite Bipasha Basu. The film was not that successful, but John performance was recognized by critics. His 2004 releases included Aetbaar(2004), Paap(2004), Lakeer(2004), Dhoom(2004) his first hit, and Madhoshi(2004).
John received his first Filmfare in the category of Best Villain for Dhoom(2004). Critics and audiences equally adored his character in Dhoom(2004). In 2005, John starred in Kaal(2005), Virudhh(2005) and Garam Masala(2005). All of these films were successful at the box office, and established John as a mainstream actor.
He also acted in Deepa Mehta Water(2005), a Canadian film, which explores the lives of widows at an ashram in Varanasi, back in 1938. The film was nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and John performance was applauded by the global audience.
John 2006 releases included a series of hits like Zinda(2006), Taxi Number 9211(2006), Baabul(2006) and Kabul Express(2006). He was nominated for Zinda(2006) for Filmfare Best Villain Award and Baabul(2006) Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award.
John next film Salaam e Ishq(2007) was well received. Tough Anurag Kashayap No Smoking(2007)(based on Hollywood film, Quitters Inc.) could not do well on box office, John fascinated the critics by his multi shaded character K in the film.
His next sports centered film, Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal(2007), portrayed him as a young football player in English Club Tournaments. This movie made him a sports icon in India. In 2008, Abraham starred alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra in Dostana(2008), his only release that year.
Produced by Karan Johar, the film performed really well at the box office. John character in the film, portrayed him as a gay icon of India. John played a terrorist in his film New York(2009). He proved his mettle while acting a Muslim, who is detained by the FBI after 9/11 attacks, and in turn becomes a terrorist.
He also featured in a film based on Parsi community in India, Little Zizou(2009). His films Alibaba Aur 41 Chor, 1 800 Love, Phillum City and Saat Khoon Maaf are currently in production pipe line. John is donning the cap of a producer with 1 800 Love.
John Abraham started dating Bipasha Basu in 2003 when the two starred in JISM(2003) together. They are in a relationship since then, and are termed as the super couple of Bollywood. Beside his acting and modeling career, John takes part in many social activities.
He is UN ambassador for Asia against Drug Abuse and Crime. He was also ambassador of Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2008 and Football league in England. He has also initiated a plan with football ace Bhaichung Bhutia to hold an Indian Football League on the lines of IPL.
When it comes to charities, John believes in giving back to the society. He donated Rs.10 lakh to the Paediatric center of Nanavati Hospital. John is also a member of Make A Wish, and NGO based in Mumbai. John is also known for his love for bikes.
He currently owns a wide collection of bikes ranging from Suzuki HayaBusa to Yamaha R1. He now also owns a classic handmade bike inspired from the American bike race model of 1910.
