Just Say It And Still Be Nice
Some people have a smooth way of telling the honest
, brutal truth without offending anyone. Many people, however, don't possess this quality. It is something that can be learned, but it takes practice and time. You don't want to just say it bluntly and risk a bad encounter. There are ways to deal with this sort of thing.
It is somewhat of an art to say what you want truthfully and not be rude. There is a chance that the person you will be honest with may still get upset anyway. But, you just have to take that risk sometimes. Being honest is very helpful in the business world. It's important for employers to let their subordinates know when they're not doing something right. When you do confront your employee, make sure you state that you their performance slightly different in your honest opinion.
When giving the person in question the truth, be as honest as possible. Start with, 'in my opinion', that way they know it's from your personal viewpoint. Refrain from being condescending, and keep the conversation neutral. There's no need to raise your voice or glare at them. It's important to remain neutral if the person is new at the job, they may still be learning the ropes. However, let them know you'd like to see a certain project done the way you wish it done.
In the event that you need to provide feedback to someone, put aside any sarcasm. Providing feedback is what helps professionals become even better at their craft. Everyone likes to hear 'good job' or 'well done' once in a while. But, hearing that in addition to how to make it better is what really helps. In a way, you speak your mind truthfully, but in a positive sense to encourage these people to try harder.
All careers have individuals that require feedback in order to improve performance. But, careers in art can get massive amounts of feedback. In the beginning, as they start their artistic careers, they generally receive lots of feedback from their instructors. As the artist learns more, it then becomes students and peers. It's important to learn to take feedback, good and bad, along with criticism.
Knowing the difference between criticizing someone's work and giving honest feedback is important. Criticism, especially for new artists, can be hard to swallow. People who don't know the difference tend to give up, and never realize that the feedback was not criticism, but honest help. Criticism comes in all forms and in every wake of life. The best thing to do is simply learn when to snap back, and when to ignore it.
Honesty, as they say, is in fact the best policy. Even when you have to just say it flat out in front of everyone; it's how you say it that matters most. You can choose to give positive feedback in a critical sense if the situation calls for it. Or, simply smile and nod, that also works too.
