Kalamandalam in Kerala state is the center for learning traditional Indian performing arts, specially the art forms which are developed in Kerala. This is the best place for the training of art forms not only in India but also in the whole world. Kalamandalam later renamed and now it is known as ''Kalamandalam Deemed University of Art and Culture''. It is situated in village Cheruthuruthy of district Thrissur.

Kalamandalam is 32 kilometers north to Thrissur district. It is located on the bank of river Nila in green lush area, that all make its surroundings lovely. Kalamandalam was founded by the famous poet, Padmabhooshan Vallathol Narayan Menon in 1930. Kalamandalam imparts the training of classical dances and various art forms of Kerala like Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam, Thullal, Kuchipudi, Bharatnatyam, Nangiar Koothu and Panchavadyam, which is a traditional orchestra. Also Kalamandalam imparts training of various percussion instruments like chenda, maddalam and mizhavu.

Kalamandalam follows Gurukula Sampradayam, which is an ancient Indian education system. Gurukula is a residential schooling where students stay with teachers, share the same atmosphere and they learn various art forms from their teachers. Besides regular courses Kalamandalam also facilitates short training programs. All the teachers of Kalamandalam are prominent. The training sessions starts in the morning till the evening and sometimes extended till late in the night.

Attractions at Kalamandalam:


Koothambalam: Koothambalam is a traditional Natyagriha (dance theater) at Kalamandalam. It is the only theater in the whole state which is built outside a temple complex. It is one of the main attractions of Kalamandalam, which was built in accordance to the principles of Natyashastra of sage Bharatmuni. Its architecture is pretty traditional. The length of theater is 14.62 meter and its width is 7.31 meter. It is supported by four pillars. Its roof structure, stage floor and pillars are made of teak wood and rose wood. The theater is divided into three main parts - the aniyara (green room), the rangam (stage), which is the space at front, side of which is reserved for audience and the mridanga patha (here the drums are kept). A number of art programs are performed here on some special occasions, watching them is a wonderful and delighting experience.

The Art Gallery: In art gallery there are graceful statues of different Kathakali characters and other performing art characters. The statues are made of fiber, that were created by the famous artist Namboodiri. The outer walls of the gallery are beautifully decorated with attractive mural paintings. In the costume room you can see a wide range of costumes, head gears, wooden masks and wooden weapons used by the Kathakalis and Koodiyattam characters.
