Why is it called aKansas Medigap? It fills in the "gaps" left by Medicare for you to pay. Here are some of the gaps you will be responsible for if you choose not to purchase Medigap insurance.

First of all, a $1,100 deductible for every hospital stay. Now there are some exceptions for this. For example, if you return to the hospital within sixty days of your previous stay for the exact same condition, you would not be required to pay this again. But consider the following scenario: Wilma gets meningitis in the middle of January and stays in the hospital for one week. As she is walking to her car after the stay, she slips on the ice and breaks her ankle, thus putting her backin the hospital for another week. The following month her bill from the hospital would be at least $2,200. If, God forbid, she had another hospital stay later that year, even if it was for either of those conditions, if it is not within 60 days, Wilma will get charged $1,100 yet again, per stay.

Secondly, $137 per day starting at day 21 in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Let's say Wilma is learning to walk on her ankle again, but Medicare only approves ten days in the hospital. She would need to go into a Skilled Nursing Facility for the remainder of her care. Now the clock is ticking because she has 100 days there, and on the 21st day the charges are going to increase dramatically. If she stays the whole three months, she'll owe over $10,000.

Following an annual deductible of $155, 20% for all outpatient care. Not bad for a $100 doctor visit, right? How about a $1500 MRI? You'd pay $300. How about a $10,000 surgery? You'd pay $2,000. How about $100,000 worth of surgeries and therapy? Well, you get the picture.

Medicare "Excess Charges." Let's say an amublance comes to pick you up and Medicare approves $1,000, but it cost the ambulance service $2,000. They can charge you an additional 15% of the Medicare approved amount, i.e. $150 extra. Apply this to various scenarios and you can see your liabilities are all over the map.
